What You Will Hear: Big choir and orchestra alongside smaller playful and ethnic ensembles. You'll find epic-ness of both the aggressive and sweeping kind. A very nice (end credits?) ballad.
Standout Tracks: In Heaven, Nothing To Fear, The Magic Fan, To Use Your Power, Snow Girl Vanishes, Zhongkui Will you be humming along? There is a short 8-10 note heroic statement that shows up often. But, no main theme or repeated motif ever really takes over. The main characteristic of this score is the wide range of colors used. The score this makes me want to dust off: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Howard Shore Will I come back to it? I'm usually disappointed by modern action writing. Too often, it seems to become a mindless part of the sound effects. I always prefer thematic variations (a la Giacchino) or stand alone action suites (hello Mr. Williams). This score doesn't provide either of those options, but the action cues cover a lot of ground. So many compositional devices are offered that I found myself totally engrossed. However, the more grandiose dramatic moments are where Navarrete really shines. The ebb and flow from huge full choir and orchestra down to small string or ethnic instrumentations are fantastic. It is an emotional ride that was extremely enjoyable. |
