Jim Henson's The Storyteller - Rachel Portman |
5/29/18 |
What You Will Hear: All strings and solo woodwinds, with a few short statements from the brass.
Standout Tracks: It was very difficult to pick out favorites from such a homogeneous score. Will You Be Humming Along? In addition to the main theme, each story usually has a few character or story motifs. |
The album this makes me want to dust off: Mr. Holmes – Carter Burwell
As I’m Listening, I’m Thinking:
Will I Come Back To It? This kind of straightforward media is increasingly rare these days, and the listening experience made for a very nice bit of nostalgia. But, in this case, I could have done with a shorter album presentation. There is a lot of music here, and most of it is in the same style from start to finish. I found my attention moving on to other music about halfway through the second disc. I doubt I’ll return for much more than a few standout moments.
As I’m Listening, I’m Thinking:
- Even the happier moments have a darker tonality. I can only describe it as energetic melancholy. Turns out, my ear was spot on. Portman: “I didn’t shy away from being really sad, or really dark, or really happy. I think that really matched the way the whole series was done, and the scripts. It always kind of ends in minor. I don’t know why. They all come back to a sad chord at the end.”
- Some of the editing of the suites is a little clumsy. But, it usually works because Portman’s work is relatively simple.
- Am I in the Shire?
- There is almost a total lack of action music. Even the more intense moments in each story are only lightly accompanied by quick strings with the clarinet playing the most aggressive roll in the ensemble. I enjoyed the bass clarinet, and the soprano saxophone even get some love!
