The Promise - Gabriel Yared

5/1/17

Picture
New life goal: that mustache.
What You Will Hear:  Light strings and woodwinds.  Traditional songs from the era and location mix in with the score.  An end credits rock ballad.

Standout Tracks: Voyage to Constantinople, Promenade, Ana and Michael, Going Up the Mountain, Mourning, The Promise

Will You Be Humming Along?  I’ll attempt (and fail) to sing along with any Chris Cornell song.  The score also features a short theme featured at the very opening and closing of the orchestra cues.

I'm off on the rhythm, but you'll get the idea.
The album this makes me want to dust off:  Wolf Totem – James Horner

Will I come back to it?  Based on the score, this is most definitely a love story told during wartime.  Not a war movie that includes romance.  The Promise is full of sorrowful beauty that never finds a happy ending.  I kept waiting for a sweeping theme to erupt but it doesn’t happen.  Without seeing the movie, I think it probably fits the story well.  There are a few adventurous and tense moments, but nothing worth mentioning.  Yared’s lush writing for strings is quite enjoyable – soothing but mournful from start to finish.
