The Incredibles 2 - Michael Giacchino

6/17/18

Picture
What You Will Hear:  The established soundscape you are expecting: big jazz orchestra (trumpet shakes!) with some tender moments thrown in.  New this time: character theme songs with acapella versions.

Standout Tracks:  Consider Yourselves Undermined!, Diggin’ The New Digs, Train of Taut, Hero Worship, Super Legal Again, World’s Worst Babysitters, Hydrofoiled Again, Looks Like I Picked The Wrong Week To Quit Oxygen, Out And a Bout, Incredits 2

Will You Be Humming Along? The main theme is all over the place and I believe there is new material for Elastigirl, the villain, maybe Jack Jack, and more.

The album this makes me want to dust off: Tomorrow Never Dies – David Arnold
As I’m Listening, I’m Thinking:
  1. The first score was an immediate favorite.  I had to work a little harder as a listener to call this one a great album.  The first one was so unique, and unabashedly jazzy.  This time around, it isn’t so unique – sequels are harder, right?
  2. So much action!  I don’t here as much thematic material holding it all together.
  3. I miss the “buildup to battle” motif (see: A Bridge Too Parr – 3:11).  Maybe I’m remembering it being used more often in the first movie more than it was? But, I’ve come to recognize it as a statement saying: “Something awesome is about to happen.”  Sorry not to hear it more on this one.
  4. The writing for drum set feels a little more like funk this time around.  There is a ton of swinging going on, but a lot of the action feels more driven than comical.  It gives that Incredibles sound a new voice (see: Train of Taut).  Giacchino said “Brad [Bird] and I knew we were going to use the main theme of course, but I still wanted it to have a different vibe while it stayed in the same vein and character.”  Mission accomplished.
  5. Along those same lines, he did a pretty good job of following the original’s blueprint, even if he wasn’t trying to.  Like the first movie, the sequel offers up a success montage (see: Diggin’ The New Digs), a few character driven moments (see: Hero Worship), the main theme used in a variety of keys and styles, and TRUMPET SHAKES (see every track)!!
  6. What's with all the acapella?

Will I Come Back To It?  Yes, but not as enthusiastically as I expected.  I enjoyed the funk/rock feel, and the overall style is as pleasing as ever.  It is a fantastic follow up, and I’ll come back to it as part of a playlist combining both scores.
