The Hateful Eight - Ennio Morricone

1/23/16

H8ful Eight
Ennio with the Parental Advisory warning...? Street cred!
Theme
Eight notes per phrase seems fitting.
What You Will Hear:  Melodic low clarinet and low double reeds, with lots of strings and woodwinds.  The brass is used sparingly, but they are piercing when heard.  Most of the score is brooding or just off-kilter enough as to fray the nerves.  There is some dialogue (never over music) and diegetic tunes, and a fun one from The White Stripes.

Standout Tracks:  L’Ultima Diligenza di Red Rock (7:31), Overture, L’Ultima Diligenza di Red Rock (2:37), Neve (12:17), La Prima Musica del Massacro, La Lettera di Lincoln

Will You Be Humming Along?  Definitely – the theme is ever present.

The score this makes me want to dust off:  Batman Returns – Danny Elfman

Will I come back to it?  Yes.  There isn’t a lot of material here; the limited thematic and harmonic material that Morricone did write will grab you from start to finish.  The main theme is like an unstoppable soldier marching forward.  It plods along and will not be stopped.  The pace of this score couldn’t be more deliberately slow, and there isn’t a moment that it needs to speed up.  Morricone has created a neatly packaged world that is completely engrossing.  I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to Tarantino or the composer (shame, I know).  But, to my uneducated ear, this score (that sounds simple but I’m sure is much more complex) really stands out as a unique accomplishment in modern scoring.
