Sonic Highways - Bryan Lee Brown

7/5/15

Picture
Road trip!!!
What You Will Hear:  Acoustic and electric guitar playing loops over a small rock ensemble or "noodling" around sustained guitar/synth backgrounds notes.

Standout Tracks:
Another Spirit, You And I, Many Branches, Believer, Those Who Go Before Us, Elapse

Will You Be Humming Along?
No melodies here, just repeated chord structures.

The score this makes me want to dust off:
The Way Way Back - Rob Simonsen

Will I come back to it?
The beginning of this album almost sounds like Dave Grohl wrote it himself.  Listening to it, I kept waiting for him to bring the vocals.  (He doesn’t.)  Fans of the Foo Fighters will enjoy what they hear, and non-fans will find most of it relaxing anyway.  The majority of the tracks are ethereal and without much form.  Some of them even consist of just one note held over changing synths and background instruments.  The score’s highlights are the more lively and optimistic cues; perfect for accompanying a Sunday afternoon drive.  I won’t be returning often, but  quiet moments on any future road trips will make this required listening.
