Sicario - Johann Johannsson

9/27/15

Picture
What You Will Hear:  Minimalist aggressive and dissonant strings with effects.  Some featured cello and Spanish guitar can be found on the more gentle tracks.

Standout Tracks:
 Desert Music, Convoy, Melancholia

Will You Be Humming Along?
You might be humming so that the monsters don’t come out and get you.

The score this makes me want to dust off:
Terminator 2: Judgement Day – Brad Fiedel

Will I come back to it?
This score is more sound effects than music and it is not an easy listen.  Don't get me wrong, there are some tender moments.  But, the intensity of the intimidation factor is almost hard to handle.  I get the feeling that Johannsson’s work is perfect when experienced in context.  Consider the subject matter: a drug war on the border between America and Mexico.  Speaking from experience, most Americans have the unnerving ability to turn a blind eye to the reality of the world.  In this case, the reality is drug fueled murder and mayhem, right across the Rio Grande.  This score isn’t one I can enjoy in the normal sense, but I respect it.  It is real, and I can’t wait to see the movie to let the music unsettle my night.
Johannsson has created a soundscape that is amazingly intimidating and intriguing.
