San Andreas - Andrew Lockington

5/22/15

Who built that there?!
What You Will Hear:  A predictably high number of “escape” action cues.  But, there is a very noticeable absence of synth and effects.  This score is a modern rarity:  an action smash-em-up flick with 99% real instruments.  (You can check my math – but I think that’s a good number.)  There is a peppering of family moments and tasteful choir throughout the intense action.  That hip sound that usually accompanies shots like this:

Standout Tracks:  Natalie’s Rescue, San Fransisco, Blake’s Trapped, Skydive, I’ll Bring Her Back, Resuscitation, San Andreas End Credits

Will you be humming along?  Maybe on the end credits.

The score this makes me want to dust off:  Remember the Titans – Trevor Rabin (Seriously – you can hear it in the chord structure of the non-action cues.)

Will I come back to it?
Have to go with a Maybe here.  This is a really fun score.  The action sequences are pretty entertaining without beating the listener over the head.  Most of the standout tracks are actually the tender moments.  But, for the most part, San Andreas is just “there” behind what I’m assuming are majorly over the top special effects.  Kudos to Lockington for sticking with real instruments and a great orchestra sound despite the fact that it will probably be lost in between all the falling skyscrapers.  The End Credits are a candidate for track of the year so I'll be back for that, and probably check this one out a few more times.
