Pixels - Henry Jackman

7/24/15

Picture
No Mario? No interest.
What You Will Hear:  Full orchestra with a noticeable lack of electronics.

Standout Tracks:  Hand-Eye Coordination, Call In The Cavalry, Unconditional Love, Gobble Or Be Gobbled, Sweet Spot

Will You Be Humming Along?  There are a few short motifs that show up in heroic moments, but none last more than a few measures.

The score this makes me want to dust off:  Journey 2 The Mysterious Island

Will I come back to it?  No.  This score is fun if you put it on in the background, but there’s not much going on thematically or developmentally.  It seems the movie probably didn't offer Jackman many opportunities...  The word generic just kept jumping out at me as I listened.  I was happy that the score is full of real instruments.  (Besides the abrupt final track, that is.)  But, with no real great themes or direction, the writing is too bland to maintain long term attention.  Pixels probably does exactly what the production team needs it to do, but as an individual listening experience, it is just kind of... there.  I'd rather play Fix It Felix, Jr.
