Outlander, Vol. I - Bear McCreary                                                                                                 2/9/15

Indoor plumbing is reason enough to ignore the heartthrob warrior and get back home.

  • What You Will Hear:  A wide range of Scottish instruments with full orchestra.  Raya Yarbrough.
  • Standout Tracks:  People Disappear All the Time, Dance of the Druids, Fallen Through Time, The Marriage Contract, The Veil of Time
  • Will you be humming along?  Yes - especially to The Veil of Time (That is some heart-wrenching stuff!)
  • The score this makes me want to dust off:  Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - Iva Davies, Christopher Gordon, & Richard Tognetti
  • Will I come back to it?  Big yes here.  Outlander's strength lies in the fact that the score is anchored by the Scottish instruments, but isn't dominated by just one.  It would have been easy to write a score featuring bagpipes, but this experience is so much more extensive.  Fiddle, penny whistle, accordian, bagpipes, and stellar orchestra writing with a Scottish flare are all there.  I appreciate the thoroughness.  As this series continues, we might even approach Battlestar levels of awesomeness.  There is enough energetic percussion mixed with some truly beautiful writing (did I mention that last track?) to keep things very interesting.  I look forward to Volume II.
