Murder On The Orient Express - Patrick Doyle

11/5/17

Picture
What You Will Hear:  Piano, strings, and a hint of middle eastern influence.  One song featuring …Michelle Pfeiffer?

Standout Tracks: Jaffa To Stamboul, Arrival, The Orient Express, Departure, Judgement, The Armstrong Case, Mr. Hubbard, Justice, Poirot, Orient Express Suite

Will You Be Humming Along?  No.  The main theme is simple and easy to remember.  But, it is rarely used.

The album this makes me want to dust off:  Downton Abbey - John Lunn

Will I come back to it?
Yes, to the cheerful parts.  The optimism of this score’s opening tracks was surprising.  To be clear, I know nothing of the plot or characters.  I was expecting something much darker from the start.  Instead, the continuous motion (maybe referencing the train?) and bright tonalities were a treat.  Murder on the Orient Express is at its best when it is in this mood.  However, as the mystery (I assume) builds, the things become more sinister and sometimes ambient.  I want to say I didn’t enjoy these cues, but every listen leaves me more intrigued.  I will definitely return for the happy moments, but also possibly to those dire tracks to uncover some hidden gems.
