Mission: Impossible - Fallout - Lorne Balfe

7/25/18

Picture
Mission: Bongos
What You Will Hear:  Bongos!  Heavy brass, a little bit of choir, and some effects.  Lots of ostinatos and other repeated material.

Standout Tracks:  The Manifesto, Good Evening Mr. Hunt, Change of Plan, Fallout, Stairs and Rooftops, No Hard Feelings, Free Fall, Cutting On One

Will You Be Humming Along?  New material includes a (1) repeated two note statement a (2) repeated three note statement, and a theme that shows up towards the finale.

Simple, but effective.
The album this makes me want to dust off: The Dark Knight – Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard

As I’m Listening, I’m Thinking:
  1. This is much darker and (the first half is) more driven than previous M:I scores.  Not as light-hearted.
  2. The bongos are a lot of fun; they are the key to the urgency throughout.
  3. The main theme rarely shows up in its full glory. The Plot theme and new material referenced above are the focus.
  4. My goodness, that is a monster brass section.
  5. The first half of the album is energetic action.  However, it starts to drag towards the second half. The bongos disappear and the momentum turns into sustained loudness.

Will I Come Back To It? I’ll be back for the opening 50% of this experience.  It is a wonderful blend of RCP and natural orchestra sound.  The rest was just too heavy for me.  Overall, this is another excellent entry into the M:I collection.
