The Legend of Tarzan - Rupert Gregson-Williams

7/8/16

Picture
I could look like that, too. If I wanted to, ya know?
What You Will Hear:  A lot of the score falls into the Immediate Music type of sound with some vocals and ample percussion in the background.  A (not-too-bad) tune from Hozier.

Standout Tracks:  Opar, Steamer and Butterfly, Returning Home, Village Ambush, Catching The Train, Elephants In The Night, Kala’s Death, Where Was Your Honor?, Stampede, The Legend of Tarzan

Will You Be Humming Along?  Yes, the main theme is simple and generic, but it works.

The album this makes me want to dust off:  King Arthur – Hans Zimmer

Will I come back to it?  The Legend of Tarzan is everything it should be.  It has the driving percussion, African grooves, tribal vocals mixed in with the modern (love it or hate it) film score sound.  It is sufficiently big and authentically dramatic.  Gregson-Williams gives us a cohesive soundcape; there really is a lot going for this score, but…  nothing that really grabs me.  The main theme is nice, the action cues are exciting, and the tender moments are quite lovely.  And that’s where the experience stops.  There is nothing about Legend of Tarzan that helps it to stand out.
