He Named Me Malala - Thomas Newman |
10/5/15 |

What You Will Hear: Gentle piano, deep strings, the usual Newman percussion effects, and every one of the composer’s signature chord structures you’ve grown to love over the years.
Standout Tracks: A Pashtun Story, School vs. Celebrity, Courtship, A Fiery Speaker, Peace Prize, Refugees, Speak What Is In Your Soul, 66 Million Girls Will You Be Humming Along? To the opening track, yes. The rest is fairly ethereal. The score this makes me want to dust off: Finding Nemo – Thomas Newman Will I come back to it? No. For the most part, this is a great mix of Mr. Banks and Nemo. The nicest part of this score is the instrumentation as Newman shows off a lot of his best tricks. The deep chords in the strings always produce a lot of feels (check out 1:27 on the first track). His usual harp, marimba, piano, sitar?, vocals, and flute are all over the place and range from soothing to hair raising. The score starts off with an uplifting characteristic, but becomes much more unsettled as it progresses. It gave Newman a fantastic range of possibilities. The only problem here is this: I’ve heard it all before. And I’ve heard it all done better. To be sure, you should listen to He Named Me Malala and hold on to some of the standout tracks. But after that first listen, head back to Shawshank, Joe Black, and all of Thomas Newman's other masterworks. |
