Everly - Bear McCreary

1/28/15

Picture
Everly was provided courtesy of Krakower Poling PR and Sparks & Shadows.  Thank You!
What You Will Hear:  Percussion and grinding (dubstep?) effects.  Piano with strings.  A bit of Asian string instruments.  A collection of jazzy Christmas tunes.

Standout Tracks:  A Gift From Taiko, Allies, Resolution, Everly End Credits

Will you be humming along?  There is a nice little motif on the piano, but beyond that there isn't much thematic material.

The score this makes me want to dust off:  Pacific Rim - Ramin Djawadi or The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - Hans Zimmer

Will I come back to it?  Yes.  I prepared myself for an action packed album, but actually preferred the softer side of this score.  There isn't a lot of this sound, but it is really nice when things slow down on Allies and Resolution.  But, don't get me wrong.  The fight scenes are (I'm sure) the focus of the movie, and the accompanying cues are entertainingly imaginative.  I'm sure it's easy to just write simple and loud for scenes like that, but Mr. McCreary seems to have thought long and hard about each track.  (Even with the possibility that the music might be hidden behind machine gun fire.)  There are a lot of tried and true effects, but you'll also regularly hear something new thrown into the mix.  Love the heart monitor on the End Credits.
