One review called him a robotic Jar Jar Binks. Ouch.

This will be on repeat for quite a while.

What You Will Hear:  Almost all synth and electronica.  The main theme exists mostly on celeste and bells.  Whistling!  ... and 8-bit?!

Standout Tracks:
Use Your Mind, A Machine That Thinks And Feels, Mayhem Downtown, Never Break A Promise, We Own This Sky, Illest Gangsta On The Block

Will you be humming along?  Absolutely love the celeste theme.

The piece this makes me want to dust off:  V For Vendetta - Dario Marianelli  (something about the harmonies...  anybody else hear it?)

Will I come back to it?

I'm not a huge synth fan, and I am always on the fence about the Remote Control Productions dominance of recent film history.  So, I didn't have high hopes going into this heavily electronic score.  But, as I listened, I immediately started to question my initial reaction.  Yes, there is a ton of synth, and quite a few tracks of brooding ambience that I'll never return to.  But, there are two parts of this score that were major positives in my book.  (1) Some of the synth reminds me of Zimmer's earlier works from the 80's & 90's.  It stays away from the modern fascination with the dubstep/techno sound.  I can't explain it any deeper than that, but a lot of Zimmer's Chappie synth is a sound I grew up with.  It put me through an unexpected (but pleasant) bout of nostalgia.  (2) That childlike theme on the celeste put me in a trance.  It manages to simultaneously create feelings of innocence and trepidation.  That simple theme is reason enough to return to this score.
