Broken Horses - John Debney

5/18/15

Picture
Talk about foreshadowing.
What You Will Hear:  Piano and Spanish guitar surrounded by lush string orchestra.  As things (I assume) go south in the story, the music follows suit and becomes much more sinister.

Standout Tracks:  Main Theme, Coming Home, Love Theme, Killing My Brother, Victoria’s Theme, Tell Me Everything, Fateful Decisions, Waltz, Theme From: Broken Horses

Will you be humming along?  Yes, there is a delicate Americana theme featured on various solo instruments that appears early and often.

The score this makes me want to dust off:  The Homesman – Marco Beltrami  ...Also features a simple (Western?) theme.

Will I come back to it?  To the standout tracks, definitely.  Due to the subject and genre, this is one of those scores that has two identities.  The character themes and more human moments are wonderful.  But, this is a suspense movie so there are a lot of cues meant to keep you on edge… not exactly great for the listening experience.  If you enjoy that sound, go for it!  If not, stick to the tracks listed above.  You’ll hear some great writing for strings and solo instruments.  The full pyramid of sound is in use, and the result is rich and full of warmth.
