Ant-Man and The Wasp - Christophe Beck

8/9/18

Picture
What You Will Hear:  Mixed meter spy comedy.

Standout Tracks:  It Ain’t Over Until the Wasp Lady Stings, Prologue, A Little Nudge, Feds, Wings and Blasters, Cautious As A Hurricane, Misdirection, I Shrink Therefore I Am, Reduce Yourself

Will You Be Humming Along?
The Wasp has a new theme with an A and B section used independently of each other throughout.  Ant-Man’s material returns, and Ghost’s theme is more of a two note effect.

The album this makes me want to dust off: Penguins of Madagascar – Lorne Balfe
As I’m Listening, I’m Thinking:
  1. The Wasp’s theme is a perfect companion for the first movie's returning material.  Melodically simple at first, it grows in complexity as it progresses.  It was nice to hear Beck stick with the focus on mixed meters, and the aggressive nature of this theme helps it to stand apart from the Rudd’s comedic presence.
  2. Speaking of comedy, it would have been nice to hear more of Ant-Man’s playful qualities.  This is clearly The Wasp’s score, and in the end, it is still a blast.
  3. Beck approaches Giacchino territory with how often he weaves the themes in and out of every cue. (and with his track titles)
  4. There seems to be a lot more electronics this time around.  It seems to be a little tongue in cheek, or maybe it makes sense when heard in context?

Will I Come Back To It?  The opening suite is incredible, and the rest of the score does struggle to live up to it. But, in the larger sense of the Ant-Man series, this is a fun follow-up that keeps things interesting from start to finish.  I’ll return to it as part of the whole MCU.
