The End Of The Tour - Danny Elfman

7/15/15

Picture
I remember audio tapes.
The End Of The Tour was provided courtesy of Krakower Poling PR and Lakeshore Records.  Thank you!
What You Will Hear:  Minimal instrumentation centered around guitar, piano, electric bass, and mallets.  It is a mix of ethereal and playful sounds.  A mix of pop songs.

Standout Tracks:
The Tour’s Over, Mall Of America, Walking The Dog, Invasion, The Big Ship (by Brian Eno), Reprise 2

Will You Be Humming Along?
No, not much in the way of memorable melodies.

The score this makes me want to dust off:
Earth To Echo – Joseph Trapanese

Will I come back to it?
Probably.  It is a soothing score, and is written in a minimalist style that I haven't previously heard from Elfman.  The notes slowly blend into each other, and the ebb and flow of the chord structure is quite enjoyable. This music sounds like Elfman recorded himself improvising in his studio while in a mood that was simultaneously melancholy and hopeful.  (I hear his place is filled with marimbas & bells… got to see that.)  My only complaint is that the pop/rock tunes interspersed throughout the album feel totally out of place.  I wish they had placed all of them at the end so I could just hit play and enjoy this unusual score uninterrupted.  Besides that small organizational issue, this album was a nice surprise.  I didn’t even know it was coming until it showed up in my inbox.  Listen to End Of The Tour if you are intrigued by the possibility of a wonderfully thoughtful, but stylistically unique Elfman score.
