Blackwood - Lorne Balfe

5/24/15

Picture
Halloween 2015 costume. Check.
What You Will Hear:  Organ, strings, and various spooky uses of organic instrumentation.  Old school use of dissonances – very effective.

Standout Tracks:  Harry’s Story, Exploring The Woods, First Night In Blackwood, Olivia Warner, An Explanation, Cadenza

Will You Be Humming Along?  Most likely not.  Most melodic development is cut short by - LOOK OUT WHAT IS THAT BEHIND YOU!?!?!

The score this makes me want to dust off:  The Road to Perdition – Thomas Newman

Will I come back to it?  I am shocked.  I usually hate horror scores.  But, with this one the answer is: Yes.  Blackwood is eerily beautiful from start to finish.  It really is the prettiest horror film music I’ve ever heard.  There is a complete lack of synthetic effects here and it is quite refreshing.  The writing for strings is rich and comforting… but be careful.  This score will sound like a warm hug one moment and then immediately turn dark and frightening without any notice.  Nothing like a hug from a ghost.
