What You Will Hear: Big themes and adventure cues mixed with thoughtful and spirited moments. Lively woodwinds (and mallets). WOODWINDS! Accented fanfare brass in the background. This is all signature Giacchino from start to finish, perhaps with a bit more of a childlike quality than we’re used to.
Standout Tracks: Gold Star Score! A great listen from start to finish. Will you be humming along? There are three major themes, all used in a wide range of styles. Each will stick with you and you’ll enjoy every moment. The score this makes me want to dust off: The Rocketeer - James Horner Will I come back to it? YES. Where to start?! Every track is worth your time. I’m a “main theme” type of guy, but it was the flourishing repetitions in the strings, woodwinds, piano, and mallets that hooked me first. Even though the excellent themes appear early and often, they only took center stage after that feeling of perpetual motion had been established in those secondary moments (check out “Pin-Ultimate Experience”). Those two aspects of this score work so well together that the album flows seamlessly. From one quiet moment to a huge action sequence, your experience won’t skip a beat. The tone of this album makes it a rarity and a listening experience not to be missed. Giacchino has created a sweeping epic, but keeps things so positively charged with childlike wonder that you almost don't notice the scale of this accomplishment. In one creative stroke of the brush, he covers a wide variety of tones but never strays from the pulse of the film. Alex Billington (over at FirstShowing.net) said it best: Sure, he's talking about the film itself, but the score fits this description beautifully, as well. Giacchino nailed it. GOLD STAR.
