What You Will Hear: Full orchestra and choir. It is contradictory, but the best way to describe it is standard epic-ness.
Standout Tracks: vs. The Abilisk, Two-Time Galaxy Savers, Mary Poppins and the Rat Will You Be Humming Along? The first movie’s theme is used moderately in several variations. (See: Two-Time Galaxy Savers) The album this makes me want to dust off: Avengers – Alan Silvestri Will I come back to it? No. The Guardians theme was an instant favorite when the first movie was released. Unfortunately, this second effort just doesn’t do much to develop the musical universe. It features almost constant action with lighter moments few and far between. (I assume the humor and romantic moments are accompanied by more 80’s hits.) One of the only unique moments is Groot Expectations. While tracks like The Mantis Touch and Family History allow for a moment to breathe, the rest of this album is always at one level: dramatic and adventurous. The action has no peaks or valleys. It’s fun, but just too similar throughout. I had hoped this would be a more substantial score centered around evolving the main theme. There is some great embellishment on Two-Time Galaxy Savers, but beyond that you’ll find nothing close to Black Tears. In a series dominated by 80’s nostalgia, I guess it is just hard to claim some of the big moments for the orchestra. Bummer. |
