Avengers: Age of Ultron - Brian Tyler & Danny Elfman |

What You Will Hear: Brass and percussion that is a frenetic assault on the ears. Elfman strings, guitar, and woodwinds for the down moments. Very short statements of previous themes for the Avengers, Thor, and Iron Man.
Standout Tracks: Heroes, It Begins, Ultron-Twins, Nothing Lasts Forever, New Avengers - Avengers: Age of Ultron Will you be humming along? Yelling is more like it. Just kidding. There is a new theme that incorporates the original Avenger's melody, but it often gets lots in the chaos. The score this makes me want to dust off: I'll just stick with the original Avengers - Alan Silvestri Will I come back to it? No. The action writing is pointless. The softer moments are nice, but equally aimless. Nods to previous efforts are appreciated, but they're so short and random that they are hardly noticeable. It almost feels like we are being pandered to (I'm looking at you Hulkbuster). The Avengers theme shows up most often, but is reshaped by Tyler. It serves as a "b section" to his newly structured theme. Why would you take a strong and established Silvestri theme, and use only part of it to create new unremarkable material? I know a lot of people want a unified sound for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but aren't we already too far gone? Isn't the variety of composers part of the experience at this point? I've enjoyed that variety so far, and Avengers: Age of Ultron is the unhappy and generic result of trying to bring the musical identities under one banner (get it?). I hate to sound harsh, but even the standout tracks left me completely uninterested. (And in those tracks, only a few seconds from each really caught my attention.) This might be the least appealing score in the entire MCU. Listen to some of the more heroic team moments, stop by Ultron-Twins, and then move on. |
